We at J&G are big proponents of Microsoft’s HyperV Sever which gives a great compromise between fantastic features, and simplified management.
The real fun begins when you start looking a Failover Clusters, which allows you to team 2 or more* HyperV servers together so that they share the load of your Virtual Machines and if there is a problem with a physical server, the partner(s) will pick up where the other left off and your virtual servers keep running, which allows for an unprecedented amount of uptime, keeping staff and students happy.
We have already deployed 3 Failover Clusters, and 6 single virtual servers since August 2010.
